“In this presentation I will describe the ancient Asklepian tradition of healing in dreams, relating this to practices of incubation throughout the Mediterranean and the Middle East. This will serve as a background to Freud’s approach to dreams and dream interpretation. This tradition also sheds light on the Freudian distinctions between manifest and latent content which, in turn correspond to his distinctions between conscious and unconscious.“
