The fetus begins its life in the womb by hearing sounds coming from the outside world and its mother's internal organs; thus it is encircled with a rhythm composed of both sound and silence. The baby's first scream upon birth is indeed, an expression of both pain and victory. Human being's first creativity begins with the production of countless sounds, even in a passive position. Over the time, the mother and the environment would mirror the baby with sounds that would facilitate the construction of the self.
While the child prepares to express themselves and become an individual thanks to the language that they will be acquiring while growing up, they may begin to speak out on the social level or they may choose to remain silent. Traces of hope, despair, anger, guilt, fear and courage in the individual and in the society are also revealed in sounds or silences.
In the 'here and now' of an analytic session, we would also listen to what the analysand says or when they remain silent, in order to make sense of the transference and countertransference. The analysand, whose field of vision is restricted by lying on the couch, then may turn their attention to their internal and external sounds. During the analysis, we listen in a multi-layered way to all the sounds and silences that the analysand has heard, internalized, or had been deprived of, starting from their intrauterine life until today, and hence we may trace their psyche.
We are looking forward to coming together in order to think and discuss on “Sound and Silence" at the 18th Psychoanalytic Views Symposium that will be held on December 7-8, 2024.
