Just as every year, Psychoanalysis: One Theory, One Master is once again bringing together two masters of psychoanalysis. We will have the opportunity to learn about Jean Laplanche, one of the most important psychoanalysts in history, from Emma Piccioli, one of the contemporary masters of psychoanalysis. Laplanche was among the most genuine figures of psychoanalysis to combine philosophical approach with the theory; elaborting Freud’s basic texts via acritical reading he reinterpreted the psychic process, seducton, trauma theories and the presence of the other.

THE PRIMACY OF THE OTHER IN PSYCHOANALYSIS
Jean Laplanche (1924-2012) radically reformulated Freud’s theory of the origin of the psychic apparatus. The core of his theorisation elaborates Freud’s early and abandoned ‘seduction theory’, removing the notion of seduction from the pathological sphere, giving it instead a place in normative development. In his ‘Generalised Theory of Seduction’ Laplanche introduces the role played by the adult other in the early constitution of psychic life, the ‘primacy of the other’: subjectivity is decentered, coming about only by way of the unconscious of an other. This requires the reconsideration of a number of key psychoanalytic concepts, beginning with that of the unconscious which can no longer be thought of as endogenous or primary.
