While psychoanalysis, at its core, focuses on the individual and his/her psyche, this focus also encompasses the individual's relationships, ties to family and society. The individual engages in a constant exchange with this inner group, the inhabitants of their inner world, as well as with groups in their outer circles, through mechanisms such as projection, internalization, introjection, identification, and projective identification. In his 1921 article "Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Self," Freud wrote, "In the individual's mental life, another is always present as a model, an object, a helper, a rival, and therefore... from the very beginning, individual psychology is also social psychology."
The individual's existence is inherently twofold: On the one hand, his/her subjectivity makes him/her unique, while on the other, he/she possesses a "herd instinct" that drives him/her toward group formations for survival. As psychoanalysts, we must open space not only to understand the individual but also to consider the social dimension of our existence. This symposium aims to explore and understand the intersections of all the circles of the psyche, from the inside out, from the singular to the plural, by moving beyond the individual session rooms of psychoanalysis. The symposium aims to think, research, and produce in the intra- subjective (the realm of drives and drive representations), inter- subjective (the realm of the transitional space, the analytic third, the link), and trans-subjective (the realm of the social and the societal), where the psyche finds simultaneous expression.
