How do the contemporary psychoanalytic authors view the concept of death instinct, which was introduced by Freud (1920) in “Civilisation and its Discontents” and has been one of the most controversial issues in the psychoanalytic literature (Laplanche and Pontalis, 1967)? Do we still need this concept clinically today? Can “death drive” help to explain the individual and collective tendencies towards aggression and destruction?
The Turkish Annual 2016 includes articles that allow us to reconsider the questions raised by the wave of destructivity that has been gradually spreading both in our country and in the world in recent years, from within the psychoanalytic theory. The Annual covers also clinical papers which include conceptualisations of contemporary psychoanalysis and which are open for multi-disciplinary readings.
