Janicki suggests that the underlying factor at the basis of such cases is the compulsive repetitions of traumatic experiences in autoerotic life. Autoerotic acts such as masturbation bring out rousing erotic memories from the pain of rejection. These actions, which assume as a regulating function regarding shame and fear of degradation, sometimes transform into addictions.
