The purpose of this essay is to study the provenance and the vicissitudes of the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_e8defe1d7f88cd76ffe93b1a1f61f60b\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">concept<\/span>, as well as its current status within clinical theory &ndash; be it in the form of classical individual <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_fe786d28a96372707a867f5d88bbf08f\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">technique<\/span>, or specific forms of applied practice like group <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_2d5c6183c533131ea7b3c51d1c80d5c0\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">analysis<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Franz Gall, the inventor of phrenology has claimed, as early as the beginning of the 19<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century, that the brain is not a homogenous unity, <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_Frans&#305;zca - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_18bb6d123efbef6d63b4b74d58058f1e\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'data-bgcolor=\"#000000\"data-tcolor=\"#000000\">but<\/span> an &lsquo;aggregate&rsquo; of mental organs, each with its own separate and specific <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_e29d95bfe93bf1f645bb1fb753ba3b41\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">function<\/span>. Barely a century later, the Zeitgeist has evolved to such a degree that the eminent neurologist Kurt Goldstein could state that : &ldquo;no finding is to be considered without a <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_f87bc34f8e7fce59c7e9dc19d7c93688\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">reference<\/span> to the whole organism and the&nbsp;<i>total situation<\/i>&rdquo; (Goldstein, 1934) and that is because organic functions observed is <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_Frans&#305;zca - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_e33d0ed67d704c9c90eeeb3615102ca4\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\" data-bgcolor=\"#000000\" data-tcolor=\"#000000\">isolation<\/span> appear different from what they actually are in the complexity of their natural <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_a56a0fd2c63580310d7d6d377e03e88c\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">functioning<\/span>. This pendulous movement between on the one hand a romantic individualism, and on the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_13f813b9d62c03e0573fefa43ca61b37\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>other<\/span> an attempt to find one&rsquo;s <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_af021b459e279a98d2f1058172c45d71\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">identity<\/span> through the collective and the social that characterizes the cultural milieu of the time, finds Freud deeply caught up in it too. This <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_c59af3f6787c2d032efae09299f0fadc\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">ambivalence<\/span> and the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_750cbb08776d9d9afd573ac5ce9d5aa5\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">tension<\/span> it creates, is abundantly manifest in most of his writings. The newly proposed scientific argument that solitary reflection is not sufficient in order to attain <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_bea972226019ed93a797d99241c41c4b\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">self-knowledge<\/span>, i.e. that the subject can only know itself through the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_f5ab4fb66071a4c5a5143937a3240010\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">knowing<\/span> of the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_13f813b9d62c03e0573fefa43ca61b37\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>Other<\/span>, and thus anything that the subject understands as being &ldquo;I&rdquo; has been fundamentally shaped by the perception of an <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_13f813b9d62c03e0573fefa43ca61b37\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>Other<\/span>, is profoundly subversive and undermining of the various theoretical positions held as valid so far. The philosopher M. Cavell formulates it thus: &ldquo;[psycho]<span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_2d5c6183c533131ea7b3c51d1c80d5c0\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">analysis<\/span> has been caught in a struggle between a view of <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_b5b6fdcf1f480222e866ff6a6596473b\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>self<\/span> as self-contained on the one hand, and on the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_13f813b9d62c03e0573fefa43ca61b37\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>other<\/span> as interpersonal in its very <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_864119a36b7b7c045adb24b929734195\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">constitution<\/span>.&rdquo; (p.143)<\/p>\n<p>Freud&rsquo;s oeuvre is rife with this contradiction. At one end we encounter him as the proponent of individualism, as someone who advocates the primacy of instinctual forces that seek <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_a389b151e0f034480aad1661645cb6aa\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">expression<\/span> and satisfaction. We are faced with a researcher of the human soul who considers the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_13f813b9d62c03e0573fefa43ca61b37\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>Other<\/span> (i.e. the &lsquo;<span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_f66b9f441a34d11044615b3be9cbebde\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>object<\/span>&rsquo;) as no more than a mere means for the fulfillment of the natural end of the individual\/biological aim of the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_ea42c15b9c0768c4f8406af87e05c7d3\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">pleasure principle<\/span>. Given that the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_05cede585c4468b08ab66109982ac6a7\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>ego<\/span> is first and foremost a <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_1cc7d338a37c273995db2b36de30b4dd\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">bodily ego<\/span>, any form of socialization, <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_Frans&#305;zca - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_b21e16407988a71bb74df3fa0c790e44\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\" data-bgcolor=\"#000000\" data-tcolor=\"#000000\">culture<\/span>, family, the very <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_e29d95bfe93bf1f645bb1fb753ba3b41\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">function<\/span> of the father, and even at times the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_89bb2b9c9cbd99ba51857ffad5a9b34e\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">primary object<\/span> itself, is considered as elements of restriction, <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_0506db4e7300db60aeb387793bece1d7\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">frustration<\/span> and therefore a source of displeasure. From this point of view, socialization is nothing <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_Frans&#305;zca - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_18bb6d123efbef6d63b4b74d58058f1e\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'data-bgcolor=\"#000000\"data-tcolor=\"#000000\">but<\/span> a necessary compromissory capitulation for the sake of survival &ndash; a product of&nbsp;<i>ananke<\/i>. At the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_13f813b9d62c03e0573fefa43ca61b37\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>other<\/span> end however, it is the same <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_c3cac929085b03c87ef4fc01f65470bc\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">thinker<\/span> who states intrepidly that &ldquo;the individual does actually carry on a twofold existence: one to serve his own purpose, and the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_13f813b9d62c03e0573fefa43ca61b37\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>other<\/span> as a link in a chain, which he serves against his will&hellip;&rdquo; (1914, p.78) The <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_fe4556c93af1ddc80666fe4d3f7a9592\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>claim<\/span> this time, is that the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_8110b1e306bca9a0050588079f97daf9\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">psychic<\/span> world is determined unconsciously by both internal and external (of the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_13f813b9d62c03e0573fefa43ca61b37\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>Other<\/span>) elements simultaneously. Searching through the literature, one comes across the Barangers once again, who state that &ldquo;nothing which can happen in an analytic treatment may be considered independent of the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_b8888372a95371224ac6b28c31f05ef5\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">analytic situation<\/span> which functions as a relatively permanent background in a relationship to [distinct] changing forms&rdquo; (1983, p.9). Further on we encounter S.H.Foulkes, who claims that &ldquo;the mind that is usually called <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_7a3fb92b73934afd437888fa50a081bf\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">intrapsychic<\/span>, is a property of the group, and the processes that take place are due to the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_750cf230526dac84a115bd5657104358\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">dynamic<\/span> interactions in this communicational matrix.&rdquo; (1974, p.112). Finally we reach Bion, who underscores that &ldquo;the individual cannot help being a member of a group&hellip;.. he is a group animal at war, not simply with the group, <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_Frans&#305;zca - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_18bb6d123efbef6d63b4b74d58058f1e\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'data-bgcolor=\"#000000\"data-tcolor=\"#000000\">but<\/span> with himself for being a group animal and with those aspects of his <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_c01fba34e83e335b2740b3f4a4319b39\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">personality<\/span> that constitute his groupishness&rdquo; (1961, p.131)<\/p>\n<p>Comparing these three positions, it is not difficult to ascertain that they are referring to the same <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_6c35b040e54c495510e875ff0f2d4b06\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">phenomenon<\/span>. The quasi-valid distinction between the individual on the one hand, and the surrounding collective dynamics that influence the individual on the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_13f813b9d62c03e0573fefa43ca61b37\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>other<\/span>, as well as the supposed dominance of the introjective over the projective processes or vice versa, are no more than distortions of a unitary&nbsp;<i>gestalt<\/i>&nbsp;whose very nature involves the continuous alternation of a figure-ground parallax. In <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_13f813b9d62c03e0573fefa43ca61b37\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>other<\/span> words, one has to remain alert to the possibility that a burgeoning absence of flexibility in <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_b36cbaed5683295382389fdeb17ec1dd\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">thought<\/span>, can lead to the conviction that everything remains interconnected and somehow acquiring meaning and understanding only from within a (Hegelian-style) system-context, thereby imposing the steady elimination of all potential contradictions. Such an exclusion of the &lsquo;unique&rsquo; and the &lsquo;incongruent&rsquo;, of the &lsquo;uncompromised&rsquo;, the &lsquo;discontinuous&rsquo; and the &lsquo;fragmented&rsquo; i.e. the &lsquo;not accommodating&rsquo; that will put into question the smooth <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_bcf338daa547b74dc7a0fb0ed635af59\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">continuity<\/span> of a closed <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_d5969d5156ccfa21e102a892434f8b4b\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>system<\/span>, leads inevitably to a condition known since Adorno as &ldquo;the total is the untrue&rdquo; (1981, p.87)<\/p>\n<p>Going back to therapeutic contexts, one could make the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_fe4556c93af1ddc80666fe4d3f7a9592\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>claim<\/span> that the group situation throws into relief the manifold levels of complexity entailed in the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_e8defe1d7f88cd76ffe93b1a1f61f60b\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">concept<\/span> of total situation, whereas in psychoanalysis proper, these levels could potentially remain mostly <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_505703c9c972ecee2e873399ead46efb\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>latent<\/span>. Words as individualizing and hence differentiating and words as carriers and hence as fusing<\/p>\n<p>&ndash;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Focusing on the alternation of projective and introjective processes with a view to giving each its due, in tandem with the interpersonal level, as these processes re-enter into the total situation<\/p>\n<p>&ndash;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The participation from within and the observation from without that is expected of the interpreting subject,&nbsp;&nbsp; etc.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, I would like to present a brief clinical vignette, that I <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_6617e5bd1206f5d8da608f56f4a6e048\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>hope<\/span> will deploy the usefulness of the above mentioned concepts in clinical practice :<\/p>\n<p>It regards an analytic group of seven years&rsquo; duration. The group consists of seven members (two men and five women) plus the group <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_c8113849faeeb319e3054c64b0775a94\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">analyst<\/span> (a man). Quite recently an older member has been replaced by a new one. A female member has recently come back from maternity leave of two months&rsquo; duration, and often talks about her baby and her feelings and experiences about that (the group has lived through her getting married, the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_761f91eadf204d3befa76650a32121fd\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">conception<\/span>, pregnancy etc.) Another member has recently divorced, whereas another is currently going through the process of repeating for the fifth time, an attempt at artificial insemination. &nbsp;The oldest member of the group, a woman, brings the following <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_4c9915afe484be7bfdd9930447198154\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>dream<\/span>:<br>\n<i>I&rsquo;m attending a reception with lots of people. The CEO of the company I <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_6f789fff541e4ae4b8b943a2e23dc1cb\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>work<\/span> for (not my immediate boss), a very attractive middle aged man, notices me from amongst the crowd, comes up to me and asks me if I&rsquo;d be interested in seeing his watch collection. He pulls up his sleeve and shows me seven watches attached to his forearm. The watches are neither aesthetically pleasing nor of any significant value. I feel disappointed and walk away. I start chatting with others in the room, <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_Frans&#305;zca - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_18bb6d123efbef6d63b4b74d58058f1e\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'data-bgcolor=\"#000000\"data-tcolor=\"#000000\">but<\/span> every now and then I catch sight of the CEO watching me from afar. I still find him attractive &ndash; no one should find this out.&nbsp; Change of scene. It&rsquo;s late at night and I&rsquo;m walking home. I&rsquo;m stark naked, <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_Frans&#305;zca - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_18bb6d123efbef6d63b4b74d58058f1e\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'data-bgcolor=\"#000000\"data-tcolor=\"#000000\">but<\/span> I&rsquo;m neither worried nor afraid. I choose to take a short-cut which I know goes past a club of ill repute. This makes me slightly apprehensive, <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_Frans&#305;zca - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_18bb6d123efbef6d63b4b74d58058f1e\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'data-bgcolor=\"#000000\"data-tcolor=\"#000000\">but<\/span> I do not stop. As I go past this club &ndash; still stark naked &ndash; I see a number of men loitering about and drinking. They see me too and start saying things to me. Words of admiration regarding my body as well as <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_8f3373cc6564399a46dd52f2a8e2cf17\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>sexual<\/span> teasers that both please and excite me. I don&rsquo;t feel threatened at all, and continue unperturbed on my way home.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The group spends a lot of time talking about this particular members &lsquo;<span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_7b7d04e29a434a1fd70f21d9e570f55d\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">oedipal<\/span> issues&rsquo; (repeatedly discussed in the past) and appears indifferent to the horizontal group dimensions. The discussion moves back to the individual level. The <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_c8113849faeeb319e3054c64b0775a94\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">analyst<\/span>&rsquo;s second comment refers to the theme of <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_c59af3f6787c2d032efae09299f0fadc\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">ambivalence<\/span> regarding leaving, that can be detected in both images in the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_4c9915afe484be7bfdd9930447198154\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>dream<\/span>. Trigger for such a comment were <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_44b2f6e2d3556036828a41b2817ad167\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">free associations of the analyst<\/span> regarding a)the fact that this member has been in the group since its inception seven years ago, b) the recent parting of another member recently, and c) the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_c8113849faeeb319e3054c64b0775a94\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">analyst<\/span>&rsquo;s ongoing ambivalent prevarication on the issue of this member&rsquo;s readiness to &lsquo;go home&rsquo;. The unanswered question would usually take the form &lsquo;Is she ready to go, is the group ready and willing to let her go?&rsquo;&nbsp; This second intervention opens up a very rich and productive discussion and leads to the member&rsquo;s eventual <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_e50e75b998596cb2bee9ef836d8ee442\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">termination<\/span> of her <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_ce8341809f8344926e348c72ef7a1d6c\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">therapy<\/span>, some six months later.<\/p>\n<p>What one notices in the above vignette, is the presence of the parallel existence of the individual and the social. Equally manifest is the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_97e7feb6621491d39ffad307bc1c4e26\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">conscious<\/span> mutual influencing and the mutual monitoring, in parallel with the <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_6bf5ac671951c9a8534502aacb5c9314\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">unconscious<\/span> <span class=\"glossaryLink cmtt_&#304;ngilizce - T&uuml;rk&ccedil;e\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"cmtt_55546dbea3ac1cac520898e1bba7ec70\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">communication<\/span> that becomes evident through the resonance of the free associations.
