PSYCHOANALYTIC EXPOSITIONS AND INNOVATIONS OVER A LONG CAREER (1979-2024)

Salman AKHTAR

Salman AkhtarIn the first part of the lecture, Salman Akhtar will discuss his explanatory and innovative contributions to the literature and practice of psychoanalysis, based on his theoretical and clinical experience gained during his long career in psychoanalysis. After reviewing Freud’s views on the death instinct, mourning, melancholia and religious belief, Klein’s manic defense and phantasy associated to Mahler’s separation-individuation, he will discuss his innovative contributions to psychoanalysis such as optimal distance, third individuation, schizoid wish to die and be reborn, forgiveness and human goodness.

In the second part, he will discuss the obstacles and techniques that we encounter in the work of the analyst-analysand pair in the analytic room through case examples. The main themes of the work in this part will be the transition from schisms through synthesis to informed oscillations, the four types of psychoanalytic listening and impediment to listening, bicultural treatments, the meaning of the analytic setting/framework, the technical handling of pauses, the simplicity-contradiction-paradox sequence, refusal to listen, imaginary interlocutors and stillness.
