SUMMARY:Dominique Scarfone
DESCRIPTION:The Sexual Drive for Power\nAbstract: In this work\, the author criticizes the sexual drive/destructive drive duality and relies on the fact that one does not encounter any abuse of power that is not connoted by the sexual in the Freudian sense\, nor any sexual abuse that is not at the same time an abuse of power\, in order to put forward the notion of a “sexual drive of power”. This is proposed not as a new drive\, but as the final common trunk of the movements of the sexual death drive (Laplanche) and of narcissistic omnipotence. The junction between these two currents is made through what Freud called a Bemächtigungstrieb\, often translated as “drive for mastery” or “drive for control” (in French: pulsion d’emprise)\, but which it would be more exact to call drive for power – thus highlighting the inherent\nviolence of its manifestation. \nDominique SCARFONE\nScarfone is honorary professor at the University of Montreal and member emeritus of the Société Psychanalytique de Montréal – from which he recently retired as a training analyst and where he currently directs the seminar “Penser avec Freud” (Thinking with Freud). In 2022 he was elected honorary member of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society.\nHe has taught psychoanalytic theory for over thirty years at the university\, founded and directed the psychoanalytic journal Trans (1992-1999) and was for several years associate editor of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis. He has published several books (Jean Laplanche\, 1997; Oublier Freud ?\, 1999; Les Pulsions\, 2004; Quartiers aux rues sans nom\, 2012; The Unpast – The actual unconscious\, 2015) as well as numerous book chapters and around 70 original articles in many languages in national and international journals. \n\nPlease click for more information and the program

SUMMARY:PSYCHONALYTICAL VIEWS 14C “Uncanny Home/Universe” (2020)
DESCRIPTION:So life was meant to be a foggy and swaying sea that could not be seen even two steps ahead. \nSabahattin Ali\, The Devil Inside Of Us \nBefore the Covid-19 pandemic\, the recent events of this period would be perceived as a nightmare if it were a dream\, and seen as an exaggerated science fiction if it were a movie.\nSuddenly\, all people and all places became uncanny and we had to take refuge in our homes … And we got behind the glasses all together. But were our homes or the universe safe? \n\nPlease click here for a detailed program.

SUMMARY:CINEMA EVENINGS 2018 - 2019 : “FROM UTOPIA TO DYSTOPIA”
DESCRIPTION:In its eighth year\, Psike Istanbul Cinema Evenings continue in collaboration with Moda Sahnesi.  The discussions of the films of 2018-2019\, under the title “From Utopia to Dystopia\,” call us to handle the kaleidoscopic movements\, which appears sometimes as dystopia and sometimes as utopia\, of the age we are in. We’ll try to include our minds and souls\, which oscillate between the “Good Place” and the “No Place”\, in the world of meanings\, through the means of psychoanalytic reading. The sessions\, which will be held monthly on Friday evenings\, will consist of film screenings followed by a discussion of the film through a psychoanalytic perspective with Psike Istanbul member psychoanalysts or psychoanalyst candidates and the active participation of directors\, actors\, experts and the audience.

SUMMARY:The Authority of the Object: Jane McAdam Freud - Conference and Workshop - September 2017
DESCRIPTION:In the conference\, titled ’The Authority of the Object’ the artist will talk about how the intertwinement of psychoanalysis with her life influenced her personal as well as her artistic identity. In the workshop titled: The Authority of the Object/ Conceptual Sculpture Workshop’ participants will be asked to create their own sculptural composition under the supervision of the artist. We hope to come together in this event that brings together Psychoanalysis and art. \n  \nCONFERENCE: THE AUTHORITY OF THE OBJECT \nI will speak about my recent works with objects. These works I made during a two-year artist’s residency at the famous London school – Harrow\, which\, along with Eton\, is one of the feeder school for the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Being in an educational seIIng\, tapped into my ambivalent relationship to authority\, which is a complicated mixture of ‘awe’ and ‘rebellion’. I wanted to work within these limitations and so I made use of what was ‘there’ and not what I wanted ‘there’ to be. Operating rather like rather like Alice in Wonderland\, I allowed the objects I found to ‘speak’ to me in their status as pseudo instructors. In this paper\, I contrast this idea with Freud’s theory of the ‘Thing’ and how we are affected by the image of the object on a pre-conscious and an unconscious level. One example is a work called OBJECT CONVERSATION\, SIT\, STAND\, EAT. This installation seems to offer instructions to the viewer: The three chairs with their inscriptions seem to call one over and to at least take up the first offer – to SIT. It reads as an instruction and this instruction is taken on through the image of the chair. It is of course also a description – a description of the function of the chair – a form on which to sit but also a description of who we are –(in the eyes of another species perhaps- as we sit\, stand or eat). \nJane McAdam Freud \nTHE AUTHORITY OF THE OBJECT/CONCEPTUAL SCULPTURE WORKSHOP \nWith objects we will provide\, you will be asked to make a sculptural composition. Implementing a method to compose the sculptures you may choose to hang or balance selected objects\, frame objects or line them up. Works will then be examined and a title found. \nJane McAdam Freud \nJANE McADAM FREUD past winner of the European Trebbia Awards for achievement in the arts\, is represented in the major public collections at home and abroad including the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. \nA prolific artist with 44 solo exhibitions McAdam Freud studied at the Royal College of Art\, London (RCA) under the supervision of John Stetzeker the conceptual artist and Edwardo Paolozzi the sculptor\, both of whom have had an influence on her work. She won a Scholarship to study sculpture in Rome winning the annual student prize. Jane has taught courses at the major London art school including the RCA\, the University of the Arts\, London and at the Academy of Fine Art in Antwerp\, Belgium. She has published several papers on her works\, which focus on family history and are informed by psychoanalytic theory.

SUMMARY:Psychoanalysis: One Theory\, One Master - Donald MELTZER - Bianca LECHAVELIER (2017)
DESCRIPTION:“MEETING WITH DONALD MELTZER IN PARIS AND IN LONDON\, AND AFTER”  \n\nBianca Lechevalier \nFull Day Conference \nJanuary 8th\, 2017 Sunday \nTime: 10:00-16:30 \nVenue:  ITU Social Facilities-Macka Campus\, Istanbul \nParticipation Certificates will be provided. \nThis year\, in “Psychoanalysis: One Theory\, One Master”\, Psike Istanbul is bringing together Donald Meltzer and Bianca Lechevalier. We are going to hear the authentic contributions of one of the masters of psychoanalysis\, child and adolescent psychoanalyst Donald Meltzer\, from Bianca Lechevalier\, one of the important names of modern-day psychoanalysis who had had the chance to work with him. \nMeeting with Donald Meltzer in Paris and in London\, and After \n“In 1954\, upon completion of his medical and psychiatry specialty trainings in New York\, Donald Meltzer settled in London. He completed his psychoanalytic training in London with M. Klein\, W.R. Bion\, R. Money-Kyrle and E. Bick. Together with his wife Martha Harris\, he provided trainings in Tavistock Clinic and in London Psychoanalytic Association. Throughout the entire world\, he gave numerous lectures. I had the chances to host him in Paris beginning from 1978\, and to give numerous case presentations to him as part of the seminars hold by GERPEN (Psychoanalytic Training and Research Group for Child and Infant Development) between the years of 1974 and 2002. Meltzer\, in the face of lack of meaning of psychotic anxieties\, in a meticulous search for meaning\, provided us the opportunity to jointly experience the field in which Beauty and Truth are explored. \nIn the weekends we met to study\, we were hearing Meltzer linking theory and clinic in a totally new way and witnessing his theory being embroidered like lace in front of our eyes. Thus\, we saw this great theorist who is among of the most creative psychoanalysts of twenty centuries conceiving and engraving one after another important concepts such as “upsetting” (le démentélement)\, “peristome”\, “aesthetic conflict”\, “clustrum”\, “sadomasochism and tyranny” in a theory on which the “lively world of dream” leaves its mark. \nThe deep gratitude I bear toward him has led me to try to convey to you this enthusiastic atmosphere which constituted the source of the theory.” \nBianca Lechevalier \nPROGRAM \n10.00-11.00 Conference \n11.00-11.30 Coffee Break \n11.30-12.30 Discussion \n12.30-14.00 Lunch \n14.00-16.30 Case Study \n\nBianca Lechevalier is an infant\, adolescent and adult psychoanalyst and psychiatrist. She is the prior chief of institute in The Paris Medical Faculty\, academic member of Caen University and the prior chief of The Center for Child Psychopedagogical Counseling. In 2003\, she was granted the Frances Tustin Prize. Since 1965 she continues to apply psychoanalytic treatment to children who has been diagnosed with autism. She has numerous papers\, book chapters and four books on psychosomatic\, autism\, dream\, and the children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors: Le corps et le sense (1968) in which she and her husband who is a neurologist wrote up their dialogues; Les Contes et la Psychanalyse (2001); Traitement psychanalytique mère- enfant (2004); and Le Souffle de l’Existence (2016). \nPARTICIPATION: The theoretical part is open to everyone. SUMMARY:Psychoanalysis: One Theory\, One Master - Jean LAPLANCHE - Emma PICCIOLI (2016)
DESCRIPTION:Just as every year\, Psychoanalysis: One Theory\, One Master is once again bringing together two masters of psychoanalysis. We will have the opportunity to learn about Jean Laplanche\, one of the most important psychoanalysts in history\, from Emma Piccioli\, one of the contemporary masters of psychoanalysis. Laplanche was among the most genuine figures of psychoanalysis to combine philosophical approach with the theory; elaborting Freud’s basic texts via acritical reading he reinterpreted the psychic process\, seducton\, trauma theories and the presence of the other. \nDate: February 28th\, 2016\nTime: 10:00 – 16:30\nPlace: Psike Istanbul \n \nTHE PRIMACY OF THE OTHER IN PSYCHOANALYSIS \nJean Laplanche (1924-2012) radically reformulated Freud’s theory of the origin of the psychic apparatus. The core of  his theorisation elaborates Freud’s early and abandoned ‘seduction theory’\, removing the notion of seduction from the pathological sphere\, giving it instead a place in normative development. In his ‘Generalised Theory of Seduction’ Laplanche introduces  the role played by the adult other  in the early constitution of psychic life\, the ‘primacy of the other’: subjectivity is decentered\, coming about only by way of the unconscious of an other. This requires the reconsideration of  a number of key psychoanalytic concepts\, beginning with that  of the unconscious which  can no longer be thought of as endogenous or primary. \n  \nPROGRAM \n10.00-11.00 Seminar \n11.00-11.30 Coffee Break \n11.30-12.30 Discussion \n12.30-14.00 Lunch \n14.00-16.30 Case Discussion \n  \nEmma Piccioli\, M.D.\, is a training and supervising analyst of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society. A past Vice President of the EPF she was also founding member of IPA Publications  and member of the IPA Supervisory Committee for Turkey until 2008. She works in private practice in Florence.

SUMMARY:SCHOOL AND THE FUTURE
DESCRIPTION:“School and Future:\nThe Future of the School\, the School of the Future” Symposium\nMarch 28th\, 2015 \nThe collaboration of Psike Istanbul and IELEV Educational Institutions which started with the symposium named “What is Happening to School\, What is Happening at School?” at Istanbul High School on March 16th 2013\, continues with a new one. Again we come together from different fields as academicians\, teacher\, psychologists\, psychiatrists\, psychological counselors\, psychoanalysts/psychoanalyst candidates and parents to deliberate on school\, education life and learning experiences. This year’s topic is “School and Future”. This time\, we will try to take a look at our stories on education that take place at school from the perspective of the future. We will ask ourselves: Do the accumulating experiences in school life truly create a destination\, a horizon for the youth in our changing world? We will ponder upon the representations of parents\, teachers and students regarding the image of the future. We will travel through the past and today while looking at the future. Hope to see you all at Istanbul High School on Saturday\, March 28th 2015 to think\, to wonder and to find new inspirations together… \nProgram\nWeb Site\nPsike Istanbul

SUMMARY:Psychoanalysis: One Theory\, One Master - Wilfred BION - Antonino FERRO (2015)
DESCRIPTION:INTERNATIONAL PSYCHOANALYTICAL ASSOCIATION (IPA) TURKEY PSYCHOANALYSIS STUDY GROUP: PSIKEISTANBUL EVENT\nPsychoanalysis: One Theory One Master Wilfred BION-Antonino FERRO \n“Bion” \nAll-day Conference \nFebruary 22\, 2015 Sunday \n10.00-17.00 \nBAHÇEŞEHİR UNIVERSITY \nTürkan Şoray Hall – Beşiktaş \nJust as every year\, Psychoanalysis: One Theory One Master is once again bringing together two masters of psychoanalysis. We will have the opportunity to learn about Wilfred Bion\, one of the most important psychoanalysts in history who has shaped psychoanalytic theory\, from David Bell\, one of the contemporary masters of psychoanalysis. \nPsychoanalysis: One Theory One Master \n‘Antonino Ferro\, through W.R. Bion’s theories\, reminds us that the psychic apparatus needs a relationship with the other in order to develop. Without a doubt\, the other must have the capacity to contain\, metabolize\, and offer the products of this process back. In this context\, the other must be filtering his emotions. Based on this thought\, Ferro recognizes the human problem\, including slow self-development\, as having a psychic apparatus with unique features. \nAntonino Ferro is the analyst and current president of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society as well as a member of IPA and APsaA. His books which have been translated into many languages include ‘Mind Works’\, Avoiding Emotions\, Living Emotions\, Supervision in Psychoanalysis: The Sao Paulo Seminars. SUMMARY:The Birth of a Secret Language -Joan MIRO “WOMEN\, BIRDS\, STARS” - February 2015
DESCRIPTION:PSIKE ISTANBUL\, STUDY GROUP OF INTERNATIONAL PSYCHOANALYSIS ASSOCIATION (IPA) IN TURKEY \nAN EVENT WITH THE COLLABORATION OF S.U. SAKIP SABANCI MUSEUM AND PSIKE ISTANBUL\nThe Birth of a Secret Language \nJOAN MIRÓ\n“WOMEN\, BIRDS\, STARS” \nPANEL CONTRIBUTORS \nAslı Day\, Nayla De Coster\, Melis Tanık Sivri\, Ümit Eren Yurtsever \n“…Pure love\ntickling the necks of\nswallows”…\n(Poetic Games\, Miró) \nWhere do women\, birds and stars come from? Are they from the land\, the sky\, or the land Miró’s poetry was born in? Was there only a spot of paint in the beginning? Black lines cutting through air like a sickle\, stains in different colors and found objects picked up from here or there… How should one regard Miró’s art? Can psychoanalysis be a way of getting closer to Miró’s art\, or the poetry that stands right behind it? Can Miró’s sculptures and Freud’s “The Interpretation of Dreams” be thought of together? Can women be as free as birds and stars? In addition to these questions posed by the panelists\, the notions of free association\, the unconscious\, unconscious fantasies\, the process of creativity and concepts of symbolization from poetry to painting will be discussed with a psychoanalytic approach. With the hope of meeting in an interactive event that will enable us to think together through contemporary art\, where attendants will share their own associations and fantasies… \nDATE: March 1\, 2015\, Sunday TIME: 14.00-15.30\nLOCATION: Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi\, Emirgan – İstanbul\nAdmission to the event is free of charge. SUMMARY:PSYCHOANALYTIC VIEWS 8 “Ailing Body: Psychosomatic” (2014)
DESCRIPTION:PSYCHOANALYTIC VIEWS 8\n“Ailing Body: Psychosomatic” \nFreud says\, “The ego is first and foremost a bodily ego; it is not merely a surface entity\, but is itself the projection of a surface. The ego is ultimately derived from bodily sensations\, chiefly from those springing from the surface of the body” and talks about how the physical stimulation or excitement yet without a psychic imprint short-circuits and transforms into impulse. Green\, on the other hand\, states that affect (particularly aggression) is repressed and symbolization is hampered in face of this destructive excitement\, and physical symptoms emerge consequently. \nMany factors play a role in the occurrence of physical illnesses\, and that which occurs in the body is not independent from the psychic state. \nIn an effort to understand the person’s psyche\, psychoanalysis strives to make visible that which has been repressed\, unrecognized and unrepresented. In the presence of psychosomatic symptoms the body uses a language and this language can only be understood within an appropriate relationship of containment—through psychoanalysis. Just like a dream or an action finding meaning during the process of analysis… \nThis year\, in our symposium titled “Ailing Body: Psychosomatic”\, we will attempt to transform the pain of the body with its many aspects into psychic writing\, into the word of the psyche. We hope you will also join us… \nPSYCHOANALYTIC VIEWS 8\n6-7 December 2014\, İstanbul\nBosphorus University Cultural Center\nAlbert Long Hall (South Campus) \nGuest Speakers\nJacques PRESS\nMarina PAPAGEORGIOU\nMaurice APPREY \nAdmission fees:\n(before 15 October 2014 ) Students – Assistants 225.-TL\, Professionals 325.-TL\, Members of Psikeİst 300.-TL\n(16 Ekim 2014 ) Students- Assistants 300.-TL\, Professionals 400.-TL\, Members of Psikeİst 375.-TL \nIBAN to transfer the registration fee: TR56 0006 7010 0000 0092 7550 49 (TL) \nFor further information:\nwww.psikanalitikbakislar.com\nt: +90 312 468 47 78
