SUMMARY:SCHOOL AND THE FUTURE
DESCRIPTION:“School and Future:\nThe Future of the School\, the School of the Future” Symposium\nMarch 28th\, 2015 \nThe collaboration of Psike Istanbul and IELEV Educational Institutions which started with the symposium named “What is Happening to School\, What is Happening at School?” at Istanbul High School on March 16th 2013\, continues with a new one. Again we come together from different fields as academicians\, teacher\, psychologists\, psychiatrists\, psychological counselors\, psychoanalysts/psychoanalyst candidates and parents to deliberate on school\, education life and learning experiences. This year’s topic is “School and Future”. This time\, we will try to take a look at our stories on education that take place at school from the perspective of the future. We will ask ourselves: Do the accumulating experiences in school life truly create a destination\, a horizon for the youth in our changing world? We will ponder upon the representations of parents\, teachers and students regarding the image of the future. We will travel through the past and today while looking at the future. Hope to see you all at Istanbul High School on Saturday\, March 28th 2015 to think\, to wonder and to find new inspirations together… \nProgram\nWeb Site\nPsike Istanbul

SUMMARY:Psychoanalysis: One Theory\, One Master - Wilfred BION - Antonino FERRO (2015)
DESCRIPTION:INTERNATIONAL PSYCHOANALYTICAL ASSOCIATION (IPA) TURKEY PSYCHOANALYSIS STUDY GROUP: PSIKEISTANBUL EVENT\nPsychoanalysis: One Theory One Master Wilfred BION-Antonino FERRO \n“Bion” \nAll-day Conference \nFebruary 22\, 2015 Sunday \n10.00-17.00 \nBAHÇEŞEHİR UNIVERSITY \nTürkan Şoray Hall – Beşiktaş \nJust as every year\, Psychoanalysis: One Theory One Master is once again bringing together two masters of psychoanalysis. We will have the opportunity to learn about Wilfred Bion\, one of the most important psychoanalysts in history who has shaped psychoanalytic theory\, from David Bell\, one of the contemporary masters of psychoanalysis. \nPsychoanalysis: One Theory One Master \n‘Antonino Ferro\, through W.R. Bion’s theories\, reminds us that the psychic apparatus needs a relationship with the other in order to develop. Without a doubt\, the other must have the capacity to contain\, metabolize\, and offer the products of this process back. In this context\, the other must be filtering his emotions. Based on this thought\, Ferro recognizes the human problem\, including slow self-development\, as having a psychic apparatus with unique features. \nAntonino Ferro is the analyst and current president of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society as well as a member of IPA and APsaA. His books which have been translated into many languages include ‘Mind Works’\, Avoiding Emotions\, Living Emotions\, Supervision in Psychoanalysis: The Sao Paulo Seminars. In 2007\, he was awarded the Mary S. Sigourney Award. He was the Europe editor International Journal of Psychoanalysis until September\, 2008. He became a member of CAPSA (Analytic Practice and Scientific Activities Committee) in 2006. He served as a member of the EPF program committee\, and chair for the IPD supervision committee. SUMMARY:The Birth of a Secret Language -Joan MIRO “WOMEN\, BIRDS\, STARS” - February 2015
DESCRIPTION:PSIKE ISTANBUL\, STUDY GROUP OF INTERNATIONAL PSYCHOANALYSIS ASSOCIATION (IPA) IN TURKEY \nAN EVENT WITH THE COLLABORATION OF S.U. SAKIP SABANCI MUSEUM AND PSIKE ISTANBUL\nThe Birth of a Secret Language \nJOAN MIRÓ\n“WOMEN\, BIRDS\, STARS” \nPANEL CONTRIBUTORS \nAslı Day\, Nayla De Coster\, Melis Tanık Sivri\, Ümit Eren Yurtsever \n“…Pure love\ntickling the necks of\nswallows”…\n(Poetic Games\, Miró) \nWhere do women\, birds and stars come from? Are they from the land\, the sky\, or the land Miró’s poetry was born in? Was there only a spot of paint in the beginning? Black lines cutting through air like a sickle\, stains in different colors and found objects picked up from here or there… How should one regard Miró’s art? Can psychoanalysis be a way of getting closer to Miró’s art\, or the poetry that stands right behind it? Can Miró’s sculptures and Freud’s “The Interpretation of Dreams” be thought of together? Can women be as free as birds and stars? In addition to these questions posed by the panelists\, the notions of free association\, the unconscious\, unconscious fantasies\, the process of creativity and concepts of symbolization from poetry to painting will be discussed with a psychoanalytic approach. With the hope of meeting in an interactive event that will enable us to think together through contemporary art\, where attendants will share their own associations and fantasies… \nDATE: March 1\, 2015\, Sunday TIME: 14.00-15.30\nLOCATION: Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi\, Emirgan – İstanbul\nAdmission to the event is free of charge. SUMMARY:PSYCHOANALYTIC VIEWS 8 “Ailing Body: Psychosomatic” (2014)
DESCRIPTION:PSYCHOANALYTIC VIEWS 8\n“Ailing Body: Psychosomatic” \nFreud says\, “The ego is first and foremost a bodily ego; it is not merely a surface entity\, but is itself the projection of a surface. The ego is ultimately derived from bodily sensations\, chiefly from those springing from the surface of the body” and talks about how the physical stimulation or excitement yet without a psychic imprint short-circuits and transforms into impulse. Green\, on the other hand\, states that affect (particularly aggression) is repressed and symbolization is hampered in face of this destructive excitement\, and physical symptoms emerge consequently. \nMany factors play a role in the occurrence of physical illnesses\, and that which occurs in the body is not independent from the psychic state. \nIn an effort to understand the person’s psyche\, psychoanalysis strives to make visible that which has been repressed\, unrecognized and unrepresented. In the presence of psychosomatic symptoms the body uses a language and this language can only be understood within an appropriate relationship of containment—through psychoanalysis. Just like a dream or an action finding meaning during the process of analysis… \nThis year\, in our symposium titled “Ailing Body: Psychosomatic”\, we will attempt to transform the pain of the body with its many aspects into psychic writing\, into the word of the psyche. We hope you will also join us… \nPSYCHOANALYTIC VIEWS 8\n6-7 December 2014\, İstanbul\nBosphorus University Cultural Center\nAlbert Long Hall (South Campus) \nGuest Speakers\nJacques PRESS\nMarina PAPAGEORGIOU\nMaurice APPREY \nAdmission fees:\n(before 15 October 2014 ) Students – Assistants 225.-TL\, Professionals 325.-TL\, Members of Psikeİst 300.-TL\n(16 Ekim 2014 ) Students- Assistants 300.-TL\, Professionals 400.-TL\, Members of Psikeİst 375.-TL \nIBAN to transfer the registration fee: TR56 0006 7010 0000 0092 7550 49 (TL) \nFor further information:\nwww.psikanalitikbakislar.com\nt: +90 312 468 47 78

SUMMARY:'Maternal States of Mind'\, Deborah BLESSING\, May 30th 2014
DESCRIPTION:Deborah Blessing\n30 May 2014 Friday 20.00- 22.00 \nThis presentation on maternal states of mind has two interconnected components: considering how the skills developed through the methodology of infant observation\, Tavistock Method are particularly relevant for clinical work with pregnant women or new mothers\, and the application of these capacities within a clinical case. A brief overview of infant observation will be offered along with a longer presentation of the struggles of one patient to become not only a biological mother\, but a mother in her own mind. The theme of seeing and being seen—literally and metaphorically—are at the center of both components. \nDeborah Blessing is social worker and psycoanalyst. She completed her training in National Institute of Psychotherapies. She worked in the Child and Family Department of Tavistock Clinic and was a member of the Team for Chidren Under Age 5. She is a permanenet staff as honorary senior child psychotherapist in Tavistock Clinic. She is a member of the program of observational studies in Washington School of Psychiatry. She is a trainer in Washington Center of Psychoanalysis\, her main subjects are intimate care\, psychoanalytic work\, and psychoanalytic couple therapy. She is also co-leader of new horisons of writing with a psychoanalitic view. She has written articles about infant observation\, eating disorders\, and siblings. She continues to work in private practice in Washigton DC. \nParticipation: Open to everyone.\nAdmission fee: 60 L.\nMembers of PSike and students: 40 L.

SUMMARY:‘Shame\, Envy and Evil Eye’\, Benjamin KILBORNE\, March 22th 2014
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Kilborne\, Benjamin Kilborne is an IPA member American training analyst. After graduating from the piano department of The Julliard School in New York\, he completed two PhDs at Sorbonne University Department of Anthropology and the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute at Los Angeles. A student of Roland Barhtes and Georges Devereux\, Kilborne has taught courses in anthropology\, history and philosophy of social sciences in addition to his work in psychoanalysis. He has authored almost a hundred articles\, which have been translated to numerous languages. His work titled Interprétetations du rêve au Maroc (1978) is the first example of comparative dream interpretation studies based on the dreams in Freud’s work. His second book\, La culture et la Nature Humaine: Les écrits de Melford Spirol (1987) is about cultural defenses. His book titled Disappearing Persons: Shame and Appearance (2002)\, also translated into Italian\, represents a new approach combining clinical cases and the discussion of literary works with an anthropological perspective. Kilborne’s latest book has been translated into Turkish. “Utanç ve Haset\, Görünüm Kaygısı ve Kem Göz” is currently in press. \nIn his speech titled “Shame\, Envy and the Evil Eye”\, Kilborne will address issues which play a key role in literature and popular culture that remain largely unexplored in psychoanalytic literature from a clinical psychoanalysis framework. \n PROGRAM \n 10.00-12.00 Conference \n12.00-14.00 Lunch Break \n14.00-16.00 Case Study \nPARTICIPATION: Open to everyone. \nLANGUAGE: English with simultaneous translation to Turkish. \nAvenue: PSİKE İstanbul \nValikonağı Cad. SUMMARY:Psychoanalysis: One Theory\, One Master- Melanie KLEIN-David BELL (2014)
DESCRIPTION:INTERNATIONAL PSYCHOANALYTICAL ASSOCIATION (IPA) TURKEY PSYCHOANALYSIS STUDY GROUP: PSIKE ISTANBUL EVENT \n\n\nPsychoanalysis: One Theory\, One Master Melanie KLEIN-David BELL \n“Melanie Klein’s Structural Theory of Mind” \nConference and Case Study\nJanuary 12\, 2014 Sunday \n10.00 – 12.30 Lecture and Discussion\n14.00 – 16.30 Case Study\nPSİKE İstanbul Şişli– İstanbul \nPsychoanalysis: One Theory One Master is once again bringing together one deceased and one contemporary master of psychoanalysis. We will have the opportunity to learn about Melanie Klein\, one of the most important psychoanalysts in history who has shaped psychoanalytic theory\, from David Bell\, one of the contemporary masters of psychoanalysis. Participation Certificates will be provided.\nSince space is limited\, we recommend registration as soon as possible. \nwww.psikeistanbul.org \nMelanie Klein (1882-1960) is widely considered to be one of the most important innovators in psychoanalysis since Freud. Through her discovery of the play technique with children and her development of psychoanalytic technique with adults\, she was able to access more primitive levels of mental functioning which laid the basis for a deeper understanding of normal and abnormal psychological functioning. Central to Klein’s theory is her development and extension of the understanding of unconscious phantasy and the recognition of two basic psychic structures or\, as she termed them ‘positions’ . These positions\, which she termed the paranoid-schizoid and the depressive positions\, have broad and deep influence on the ways in which we experience the world and can be thought of as different ways in which the mind is structured. Her work laid the basis for the next generation of analysts (such as Hanna Segal\, Herbert Rosenfeld\, Wilfred Bion and Betty Joseph) to make fundamental contributions to the theory and practice of psychoanalysis and to our understanding of literature\, art and socio-cultural phenomena in general. \nDr David Bell is the previous President of The British Psychoanalytic Society. He is a Consultant Psychiatrist in the Adult Department at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust where is Director of Postgraduate Training and leads a specialist service (the Fitzjohn’s Unit) for the more complex cases. He lectures and publishes widely on various subjects including the historical development of psychoanalytic concepts (Freud\, Klein and Bion) and the psychoanalytic understanding of severe disorder . For his entire professional career he has deeply involved himself in interdisciplinary studies (the relation between psychoanalysis and literature\, philosophy and socio-political theory). SUMMARY:PSYCHOANALYTIC VIEWS 7 'Siblings and Psychoanalysis' (2013)
DESCRIPTION:The Psychoanalytic Views \, which will be organized for the seventh time this year\, will explore the subject of siblings. Siblings\, who have existed through passionate relations filled with emotions of love or hate in the lives or fantasies of most of us since our very first years of childhood\, are almost lapsed into silence in psychoanalytic theory. \nSiblings have a determining role in the structuring of our psyche\, as well as shaping the ways in which we build our family and social relations. The approach of psychoanalysis evolving around the parent-child relationship and the Oedipus complex surely constitutes the basis of the theory. In our symposium this year we will discuss the subject of siblings by incorporating this horizontal axis to psychoanalytic theory and clinical practice. \nWe can postulate that siblings are at the core of diverse social constructions and many social relations including that of the parent and child psychologically. The problems we experience in early childhood with our siblings and our means of overcoming these shape our social relations in our adult life. \nMost of us have had a brother or a sister; we might have wanted to have a sibling or perhaps have dreaded it. This situation is of vital social and psychological importance; therefore peers take the place of siblings. Together we will try to understand these relationships\, positioned on the horizontal plane\, that start with siblings and continue with kinships and friendships with peers. \nWe invite you to the symposium to discuss together the present and potential pathology of the human being\, and the relation between our loves and lives\, hatreds and deaths through the notion of siblings. \n14-15 December 2013\nIstanbulBoğaziçi University Cultural Center Albert Long Hall (South Campus)Speakers\nEva Schmid-GILMOR\nGabriela AST\nVamik VOLKAN\nAsli Çepik KURUOĞLU\nBella HABİP\nİrem ANLI\nNüket SİRMAN\nÖzden TERBAŞ\nPınar LİMNİLİ\nRefhan BALKAN\nSibel MERCAN\nŞebnem KURTARAN\nTijen DEMİRÖRS\nYavuz ERTEN\nYeşim KORKUTScientific Committee\nAyla YAZICI (Chair)\nBerrak CIĞEROĞLU\nÖzden TERBAŞ\nPınar LİMNİLİ\nRefhan BALKAN \n\nOrganizing Committee\nIşın SAYIN (Chair)\nBanu BÜYÜKKAL\nGülgün ALPTEKIN\nSemra YALÇINKAYA\nÜmit Eren YURTSEVER\n\nSymposium Secretariat\n1 C M tourism\n2480 Sokak No: 94\, 06810 Ümitköy –\nANKARA\nT: +90 312 468 47 78\nEposta: congress@icmtourism.com \nWeb: http//www.psikanalitikbakislar.com

SUMMARY:PSYCHOANALYTIC VIEWS 6: 'Gender\, Sexual Identity and Sexuality' (2012)
DESCRIPTION:PSYCHOANALYTIC VIEWS 6 \nGENDER\, SEXUAL IDENTITY AND SEXUALITY \n\nThis year\, the 6th annual Psychoanalytic Views Symposium will explore a subject that has been crucial to the century long development and practice of psychoanalytic theory and is still being debated and enriched with new perspectives today. \nIn one of his letters to Fliess\, Freud writes “Most recently I have been busy with the delineation of sexual acts\, and in the process discovered the pleasure pump (not the air pump) and several other curiosa\, but for the time being shall not talk about them…” Yet Freud continues to be fascinated\, and to think and talk about not only sexual activity\, but also gender\, child sexuality\, psychic representations of sexuality and sexual identity. Thus psychoanalysis\, which relies on the unity of psychic and sexual development\, is grounded in this inquiry. Freud’s theory of childhood sexuality was revolutionary. Through this theory we had the opportunity to scrutinize the inner world of human beings through psychosexual development periods. \n\nWe are not born as men and women; masculinity and femininity develop over time both in relation to and independent of out biological fate. Anatomy is what is given to us; all of us determine our psychological\, social\, and emotional life and object choices with the meanings we attribute to what has been given to us.\nAt the outset\, psychoanalysts mostly analyzed women patients. However\, the theory was most constructed over the psychosexual development of men. According to some\, this was unfair to women. In time many counter views and new perspectives emerged. Today\, according to the contemporary perspective\, gender as a complex concept is influenced by many frames of reference. Each individual’s masculinity and/or femininity is unique and distinct. Sexual identity is constructed socially\, politically and psychologically.\nIn this symposium\, we aim to introduce how the approach to gender\, sexual identity and sexuality has evolved from the beginning of psychosexual theory to the present\, and discuss diverse approaches and perspectives. We hope to you can join us for a lucrative discussion…\n\nPSYCHOANALYTIC VIEWS 6\nhttp://www.psikanalitikbakislar.org\n“Gender\, Sexual Identity and Sexuality”\n8-9 December 2012\nBosphorus University Cultural Center\nAlbert Long Hall\n(South Campus)\nScientific Committee\nMine Özgüroğlu (Chair)\nGülgün Alptekin\nRefhan Balkan\nBerrak Ciğeroğlu\nPınar Limnili Özeren\nGuest Speakers\nChris Johannidis\nItamar Levy\nJacqueline Schaeffer\nLynne Segal\n\nOrganizing Committee\nNilgün Taşkıntuna (Chair)\nYavuz Erten\nIşın Sayın\nÜmit Eren Yurtsever\n\n\nPlease click here for the detailed program

SUMMARY:‘Autoeroticism’\, Anna JANICKI\, April 4th 2012
DESCRIPTION:According to Anna Janicki\, autoeroticism and autoerotic fantasies that disrupt functionality signify desire for recognition and inspiration that remain unseen and unmet by the other. Janicki suggests that the underlying factor at the basis of such cases is the compulsive repetitions of traumatic experiences in autoerotic life. Autoerotic acts such as masturbation bring out rousing erotic memories from the pain of rejection. These actions\, which assume as a regulating function regarding shame and fear of degradation\, sometimes transform into addictions. In her presentation\, Janicki will share three case studies she has worked through employing this model. \nLANGUAGE: English\, with consecutive translation to Turkish. \nVENUE: Psike İstanbul Center\, Valikonağı Av. SUMMARY:'His Father\, He Has Murdered A Child'\, Maurice APPREY\, December 3th 2011
DESCRIPTION:How Does An Analysand Identify With A Father To Cultivate The Paternal Function When\,\nLike His Father\, He Has Murdered A Child? \nThe Deployment Of Two Analytıc Tradıtıons To Restore The Paternal Functıon\nDecember 3\,  2011 Saturday\, at 6 pm \nPsychoanalysts are accustomed to working with analysands with a view to negotiating and resolving the Oedipus complex in order to arrive at symbolic\, real\, and healthy identifications with their inside and outside parents. It is rare\, however\, to have an opportunity to analyze a subject who has killed like his father. In such a situation\, how does a subject identify with his father without confirming that he is a murderer?\nThis paper provides an account of the resolution of the Oedipus complex using two apparently antithetical traditions. Therefore instead of psychoanalysts thinking in terms of dueling paradigms\, we could begin to think in terms of mediating paradigms.\nIt will accordingly serve as a plea for a philosophical pragmatism that would encourage psychoanalysts to learn multiple traditions of thought and praxes in order to optimally advance the treatment of analysands. \nMaurice Apprey PhD\, DM\, FIPA\, is a  psychoanalyst\, and a full professor of psychiatry at the University of Virginia. He trained at the Anna Freud Centre\, London and the New York Freudian Society in child\, adolescent and adult psychoanalysis. He is a teacher and supervisor in the training program of Psike Istanbul candidates sponsored by the IPA. The philosophical foundation behind his work is the reception of French Phenomenology (Maurice Merleau-Ponty\, Gaston Bachelard\, Jean-Luc Marion\, Claude Romano\, etc) from Classical German Phenomenology (mainly Husserl). \nParticipation: Open to psychoanalysts\, candidates\, psychologists\, psychiatrists\, psychological counselors\, social workers\, psychiatric nurses\, psychiatric assistants\, and psychology and psychological counseling undergraduate and graduate students. \nLanguage: English with consecutive translation to Turkish. \nVenue: Psike İstanbul Center\, Valikonağı Avenue\, Süleyman Nazif Street\, Park Apt.\nNo: 13/12\, 4th Floor\, Nişantaşı 34371 İstanbul Türkiye\nTel & Fax: (212) 224 10 03 \nRegistration Fee: 50 TL\nPsike Istanbul members\, and students: 40 TL \nPayment will be made upon entrance.\nPlease call or email to make reservations. \npsikeistanbul@gmail.com

SUMMARY:'Psychical Conflict to Global Violence' \, Sue GRAND\, April 24th 2011
DESCRIPTION:CONFERENCE and CASE STUDY \nSue Grand\nFrom Psychical Conflict to Global Violence: Searching for Peace\n24 April 2011 Sunday @ 10.00 – 14.30\n \n\nThe American psychoanalyst Sue Grand who works in applied psychoanalysis on issues such as social trauma\, ideologies\, and war will address\, in this conference\, the psychic aspects of otherization in times of social conflict.  In our private lives\, and on the global stage\, we tend to split the world into heroes\, cowards\, and villains. To soothe traumatic wounds\, we idealize the hero. This idealization asserts our omnipotence\, relieves our death anxiety\, and foments conflict. When we divide the world into heroes\, cowards\, and villains\, our idealized objects can only be sustained by violence. We will attack the “enemy other” – in our selves\, in our relationships\, and in out groups. We will shame\, and diminish\, whatever seems weak\, dependent or vulnerable – inside of ourselves\, or in others. With this mechanism\, we keep renewing traumatic experience\, in our private lives\, and on the world stage.  Through a focus on war and war veterans\, this presentation examines our cultural constructions of heroes\, cowards\, and villains. SUMMARY:Introductory Seminars to Psychoanalysis 2011-2012
DESCRIPTION:The “Introduction to Psychoanalysis” seminars organized by our Association are open to psychiatrists\, and psychiatric assistants\, clinical psychologists\, psychologists\, graduate psychology students\, and psychological counselors who would like to study primary psychoanalytic texts and who are also interested in the practical application of the psychoanalytic approach in their individual or institutional practice. The seminars\, which will be organized for the fourth time this year\, will be conducted for two different levels. In the previous years\, the “Beginning Psychoanalysis” had explored Sigmund Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis\, the encounter between psychoanalytical concepts and clinical practice\, the multi dimensionality and diversity of theory and fields of practice through primary psychoanalytic texts with theoretical seminars and presentation of case studies. This year\, in order to facilitate the learning of participants just getting acquainted with psychoanalytical theory and treatment\, the seminars will follow books by authors who most succinctly and lucidly explore Freud’s psychoanalytic theory.\nAdditionally\, the “Second Step: Case Studies” seminars are designed around case studies in accordance with the demands of participants who have completed Introduction to Psychoanalysis seminars in previous years and would like to pursue more advanced studies.   . \nBEGINNING PSYCHOANALYSIS\nPsychoanalytic theory\, defense mechanisms\, personality organizations and psychopathology will be explored in the framework of C. Brenner’s An Elementary Textbook of Psychoanalysis\, N. McWilliams’s Psychoanalytic Diagnosis and A. Freud’s The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense\, R. Perron’s What is Psychoanalysis?\, and V. Volkan’s Psychoanalytic Technique Expanded. \nSECOND STEP: CASE studIes\nThis series\, which aims to facilitate an exchange of clinical practice and a discussion of the clinical reflections of theoretical issues\, will entail presentations and discussions of case studies shared by participants.\nRecommended volumes for further reading:\nSigmund Freud’s Psychopathology of Everyday Life\, Interpretation of Dreams\, On Metapsychology\, and other volumes; Anna Freud’s The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense; Melanie Klein’s Envy and Gratitude\, Love\, Guilt and Reparation; C.
